Book Review: A Warrior’s Faith

Disclosure: I was sent a free copy of the book thanks to Family Christian.  All opinions are 100% my own.

A Warrior's Faith - exciting story of the life of Ryan Job, Navy Seal

I just finished this brand new book called A Warrior's Faith, and I am happy to say I was very encouraged by it!

I was a little skeptical when I first picked it up because, you see, “faith” means a lot of different things to a lot of different people.

I thought, “Well, this might be an exciting story, but will his “faith” really be real?

At first it appeared that I would be right – that this soldier's faith was just a fluffy, feel-good nebulous idea without a concrete object of his faith.

But as I kept reading I realized that the reason it seemed that way is because the author (this is a biography, not an autobiography) was not sure of his own faith.  He was searching for what to believe and why he should believe it, and I think it clouded his description of the faith of the soldier about whom the book was written.

I don't want to spoil the book for you, but I was very happy to realize at the end of the book that Ryan Job (the soldier in this book) did indeed have a clear testimony of salvation.  I also thought it was exciting that the author is truly searching for the answers to life, and that is due very much to the testimony of Ryan Job and his wife.

A Warrior's Faith - exciting story of Ryan Job, Navy Seal.

Beyond the exciting news of a soldier who loved God and who had placed his faith in Jesus Christ for salvation, the stories about Ryan's life as a soldier were captivating.  The sacrifices he and his wife made for our country made me so thankful to be an American and so grateful to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to keep this country free.

I really enjoy reading nonfiction, especially when it involves a true hero, as Ryan Job was.  You can pick up this brand new book at Family Christian.  You won't be disappointed!

Organizing the Gluten Free Pantry

Organizing the Gluten Free Pantry

Going gluten free wasn't terribly hard once I found some go-to recipes.

There are plenty of recipes for me to continue to enjoy pizza, pancakes, muffins, etc. made with gluten free flour.

The problem I have is not at all with the way the food tastes.  The problem is where to put the million types of flour I must use to make the food!

Sweet rice flour, white rice flour, brown rice flour,  tapioca flour, potato starch, xanthan gum…where does it end?!

And more importantly, where do I put all this stuff?

Organize Your Gluten Free Pantry

There were miscellaneous bags and containers everywhere!

I knew I could not leave things as they were, and I needed a quick, easy, and pretty solution!

I go through a canister of protein powder about once a month, so I started saving them several months ago.

This gave me uniform canisters for my huge assortment of ingredients.  They are the perfect size too!

To make them pretty and help me identify the contents, I got these adorable chalk board labels from Wayfair and applied them to the canisters.

Organize Your Gluten Free Pantry

I still have more things in loose bags, so I will continue to save the canisters from my protein powder.

This was the perfect way for me to keep everything neatly organized and nice looking!

Organizing the Gluten Free Pantry

I apologize for the quality of the photos – it is very dark in my pantry.  But hopefully you are able to tell well enough what you need to do to get all those ingredients organized!

I've also ordered a couple of wire vegetable bins to use in my pantry instead of unceremoniously throwing the bags of potatoes and onions in there.  They haven't arrived yet, but I'm excited about how much cuter that's going to look than what I've got now.

And this one is perfect for storing all the non-food items like zip-top bags and plastic wrap:

Do you have any problem areas in your gluten free pantry?  Do these look like solutions that would solve them?

Why You Need to Menu Plan (and how I do it)

Why Every Homemaker Needs to Menu Plan!

It goes like this:

You get home from the grocery store and pull all of the rotten junk out of the refrigerator that you never got around to using last week. All the random vegetables that you bought because you knew you should make vegetables with your meals are now molded and unusable. You shake your head in disgust, throw them away, and put a brand new round of random foods into the fridge.

Dinner time comes and you're rummaging through all the random ingredients you purchased trying to come up with something that will taste halfway decent. You forgot one key ingredient to the lasagna you were thinking of making, but you don't realize it until halfway through your prep. time. You continue on with the whatever substitution you can find, but the result is less than stellar. Everyone eats a courtesy helping and the rest goes into the fridge. “We'll eat the leftovers for lunch” you half-heartedly tell yourself, knowing full well that you might as well just throw it away now. But alas, you allow the disfavored food to sit in the refrigerator until you spy a layer of fuzzy green growing on the top of your leftover lasagna.

“Someday I will get my act together” you think as you toss it into the trash. “I really need to start planning things out a little better.”

But here's the thing: Telling yourself you need to change and changing are two different things.

We all have good intentions, but intentions never get us anywhere unless we follow through.

Can I tell you about something that helped me start planning healthy (and frugal!) meals for my family?

It's called Build a Menu, and it works like this:

1. Choose the store where you'd like to shop (it even includes my favorite store – ALDI!)
2. Choose the recipes you want to make. You can plan out every meal of the day as well as snacks and even dessert if you want. And those on special diets needn't worry – they've got you covered too! Gluten free, Paleo, Trim Healthy Mama, Allergen Free…they've got it all!
3. As you select your recipes, a shopping list is automatically generating for you and tallying up your total. Each recipe is marked with its approximate cost, so if you go over-budget, you can go back and de-select something or switch out a more expensive recipe for a cheaper one.

That's it! You can drag and drop your recipes onto a weekly or monthly calendar if you like or just print the entire thing as a list and choose whichever one suits your fancy that day. The important thing is that you've planned for specific meals and shopped from a specific list.

No more buying random items and pulling them – rotten – from the fridge a week or two later!

You can give it a try with a free 2 week subscription.

How I Work from Home as a Mom of Small Children

How I Work from Home with Small Children

Working from home with small children can be a challenge! It can be hard to keep the balance between giving them the time and attention they need and accomplishing other things that need to be done.

To make it work for me, I work only early in the morning before the kids are up and during their nap time. The older ones don't always need a real nap, but they have quiet time every day.

Even though I was working while they were in bed, it was still a challenge sometimes because I needed to get up and keep checking on them. There was lots of coloring on the walls, eating of hidden candy stashes, throwing tangerines at the walls (yes, really!), and general commotion that was waking up their baby sister. It's hard to focus on getting anything done when there are interruptions the entire time!

Enter the video monitor! I can get them down for naps or quiet time, then sit down to work while keeping an eye on everybody without getting up from my computer.

Levana video monitor

The Levana Stella monitor that I am using comes with two cameras, so I was able to put one in both the boys' room and the girls' room.

If something is going on, I don't have to get up; I can simply press the “talk” button on the monitor and remind them that they need to calm down.

I love being able to do more while knowing the baby is safe from tangerine-throwing kids!

More about Levana:
